Staying on the beach in Bentota and want to see wild elephants? A day tour from Bentota to Udawalawe National Park and back is the perfect break from the sand. Udawalawe sits about 145–160 km inland from the Bentota resorts — only around 2.5–3 hours each way via the Southern Expressway — has a 95%+ elephant sighting rate, and is open 365 days a year. This guide covers the route and drive time, the best times to visit the park and to leave Bentota, a full hour-by-hour itinerary, where to eat lunch, and a half-day safari price table for 10 popular Bentota hotels (1 person).
Because Bentota is closer to the park than Colombo, the drive is shorter and the price is a little lower. Distances and timings here are based on the Department of Wildlife Conservation of Sri Lanka, Southern Expressway route data, and our own team driving Udawalawe day tours from the south-west coast since 2015.

From Bentota there are two main ways to reach Udawalawe National Park:
- Southern Expressway (E01) — fastest: join the E01 at the Welipenna interchange just inland of Bentota, run south-east toward Sooriyawewa/Barawakumbuka, then a short inland stretch to the park gate. About 2.5–3 hours.
- Inland route — scenic: the direct A-road route is a touch shorter in distance (~150 km) but slower, as some inland sections are narrow. Lovely for the return if you have time.
Total round-trip driving is roughly 290–320 km. The expressway route is what we use for day tours because it maximises your time with the elephants. (Bentota–Udawalawe is commonly quoted at ~150–186 km by road, ~2h17m–3h drive depending on route and traffic.)
⏰ Best Times: When to Visit the Park & When to Leave Bentota
The park is open daily 6:00 AM–6:00 PM. Wildlife is most active early morning and late afternoon, so plan around one of those windows:
| Safari window | Best park time | Leave Bentota by | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning safari (best) | 6:00 – 9:30 AM | ~2:45–3:00 AM | Peak activity, cool air, best light, fewer jeeps |
| Afternoon safari | 3:00 – 6:00 PM | ~11:00–11:30 AM | Relaxed start, golden hour, elephants at water |
| Full-day (both peaks) | 8 hours total | ~2:30–3:00 AM | Photographers & birders |
Our recommendation for a day tour: with Bentota only ~3 hours away, the morning safari is very doable — you'll see the best elephants and be back at your beach hotel by lunchtime or early afternoon. Prefer a relaxed start? The afternoon safari is easy, leaving late morning and returning in the evening.
Best months: Udawalawe is a year-round destination (it never closes). The drier May–September months concentrate wildlife around the reservoir, while the greener northeast-monsoon months bring migratory birds and lush scenery with fewer crowds.

🎯 Bentota Day-Tour Tips
- Arrange the pickup with your resort the night before — most Bentota hotels can prepare a breakfast box or hold breakfast for your early-afternoon return.
- Take the morning safari. A ~3-hour drive from Bentota means you're back at the beach by early afternoon with the whole evening free.
- Pack a beach-to-bush bag: closed shoes, hat and light layers for the dawn safari, plus your swimwear for the moment you get back.
- Add the Elephant Transit Home (9:00 AM feeding) — it's right beside the park, a perfect mid-morning stop before lunch.
- Couple or family? The private vehicle is one price for 1–6 people, so sharing from your resort slashes the per-person cost.
🏖️ Make It a South-Coast Safari Day
The big advantage of basing yourself in Bentota is how much sits within easy reach. If you'd rather skip the very early start, pair the safari with the south-west coast on the way back or across separate days:
- Galle Fort — the UNESCO-listed Dutch fort is ~45–60 minutes south of Bentota; ramparts, cafés and boutiques for a sunset stroll.
- Hikkaduwa — coral-reef snorkelling and the turtle hatcheries, ~20–30 minutes from Bentota.
- Madu River (Balapitiya) — a mangrove boat safari right on Bentota's doorstep, ideal for a relaxed second day.
- Brief Garden & Lunuganga — Geoffrey & Bevis Bawa's famous garden estates, a short inland drive.
Tell us your dates and we'll build a multi-day plan that combines your Udawalawe safari with the coast.
