About 3 hours each way by road. Udawalawe is the closest major national park to Galle, making it the standard big-game day trip from the Fort and nearby beaches.
Around 3:15–3:30 AM for the morning safari, so you reach the gate for the 6:00 AM opening. If that is too early, a mid-morning departure (~11:30 AM) connects to the 3:00 PM afternoon safari.
All-inclusive private day trips run $100–150 per person depending on group size: hotel pickup and drop-off around Galle, air-conditioned transfer, private 4WD jeep, park entrance tickets and naturalist guide. Meals are the only extra.
Very — the jeep is private (never shared with strangers), the driving pace is gentle, and elephants are close to guaranteed, which children love. Under-6s enter the park free; children 6–12 pay a reduced gate fee.
Udawalawe has a 95%+ sighting rate with 250–500 resident elephants year-round — most guests see several herds in one morning drive.
Yes — Galle Fort, Unawatuna, Talpe, Koggala, Ahangama and the surrounding coast are all included pickup points at the same price.
