Udawalawe is the most dependable elephant park in Sri Lanka. Around 250 elephants live here permanently, and because the park is open grassland rather than thick jungle, you tend to see them within minutes rather than hunting for hours. Morning or evening — which should you book?
This is the question we get more than any other, and the honest answer is that they are different rather than better and worse.

Half day or full day?
Most people over-buy here. Udawalawe is not a park where you need to grind out ten hours to see something — the grassland does the work for you.
- Book a half day if this is your first Sri Lankan safari, you are travelling with children, you are fitting the park into a transfer day, or you mainly want to see elephants. This covers the large majority of visitors.
- Book a full day if you are shooting seriously and want both morning and evening light, you are chasing the harder species — leopard, sloth bear, the rarer raptors — or you simply want unhurried time in the park.
A full day is not four extra hours of driving. The middle of the day is hot and the animals go quiet, so the day is split into two drives with a proper break between them.

What to bring
- Use the toilet at the gate. There are no facilities inside the park and no stopping once the drive starts — the loop runs about three hours.
- A light jacket or fleece for the pre-dawn start; it is warm by 8 AM
- Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen — the upper deck is open
- Binoculars if you have them, and a zoom lens rather than a wide one
- Something to hold your camera steady — the tracks are rough
Add the Elephant Transit Home
The Elephant Transit Home sits minutes from the park and raises orphaned calves for release back into the wild — no riding, no bathing, no chains. There are four feeding sessions a day and the noon one pairs perfectly with a morning safari. It is a separate entrance and a separate ticket, so you do not need a park ticket to visit it.

Should I do a morning or an evening safari?
Morning (6:00–10:00 AM) is cooler, the animals are most active and the park is quietest at opening. Evening brings herds down to the water and gives you the golden hour. Both are good — if you only do one drive, and especially with children, take the morning.
Is a full-day safari worth it?
For most first-timers, no — a half day of 3–4 hours is enough here because the terrain is open. A full day earns its cost for photographers, birders and anyone who wants both morning and evening light.
How long is a half-day safari?
About 3 to 4 hours inside the park, plus transfer time from your hotel.
How many people fit in one jeep?
Up to 6 passengers on the open upper deck, driver and guide in the cab. Every jeep is private to your group. Seven or more means a second jeep.
Will I definitely see elephants?
Udawalawe has about 250 resident elephants in open grassland, giving a 95%+ sighting rate year-round. Most guests see several herds in one drive. With wild animals, no honest operator promises more than that.
Are there toilets inside the park?
Only at the entrance. Nothing inside, and no stopping once you are through the gate — use them before you go in.
What time does the park open and close?
Vehicles are admitted from 6:00 AM and must be out by 6:00 PM, every day. Afternoon drives normally enter around 2:00 PM.
How much does it cost?
