Colombo to Udawalawe Day Tour: Times, Prices & Itinerary (2026)

📅 June 29, 2026 ⏱️ 12 min read 🐘 Day Trip & Safari

Short on time but desperate to see wild elephants? A day tour from Colombo to Udawalawe National Park and back is the answer. Udawalawe is one of the only big-game parks in Sri Lanka you can comfortably visit as a round trip from the capital — it sits about 165–180 km south of Colombo, has a 95%+ elephant sighting rate, and is open 365 days a year. This guide covers the route and drive time, the best times to visit the park and to leave Colombo, a full hour-by-hour itinerary, where to eat lunch, and a half-day safari price table for 10 popular Colombo hotels (1 person).

Distances and timings here are based on the Department of Wildlife Conservation of Sri Lanka, route data from the Southern Expressway network, and our own team driving Udawalawe day tours from Colombo since 2015.

🚗 The Route & Drive Time (Colombo → Udawalawe)

From Colombo there are two main routes to Udawalawe National Park:

Total round-trip driving is roughly 330–360 km. The expressway route is what we use for day tours because it maximises your time in the park. (Road distance Colombo–Udawalawe is commonly quoted at 165 km via the sidebar route and up to ~186 km by road; drive time 3h41m–5h.)

⏰ Best Times: When to Visit the Park & When to Leave Colombo

The park is open daily 6:00 AM–6:00 PM. Wildlife is most active early morning and late afternoon, so plan around one of those windows:

Safari windowBest park timeLeave Colombo byGood for
Morning safari (best)6:00 – 9:30 AM~1:00–1:30 AMPeak activity, cool air, best light, fewer jeeps
Afternoon safari3:00 – 6:00 PM~9:00–9:30 AMRelaxed start, golden hour, elephants at water
Full-day (both peaks)8 hours total~12:30–1:00 AMPhotographers & birders

Our recommendation for a day tour: if you can handle the very early start, the morning safari delivers the best elephants and photography and gets you back to Colombo by early evening. Prefer a lie-in? The afternoon safari is easy and gorgeous, but you'll arrive back in Colombo around 10–11 PM.

Best months: Udawalawe is a year-round destination (it never closes). The drier May–September months concentrate wildlife around the reservoir, while the greener northeast-monsoon months bring migratory birds and lush scenery with fewer crowds.

📋 Sample Day-Tour Itinerary (Morning Safari)

Prefer the afternoon? Shift everything later: leave Colombo ~9:30 AM, lunch en route, 3:00 PM safari, back in Colombo ~10:30 PM.

💰 Half-Day Safari Price From 10 Popular Colombo Hotels (1 Person)

The table below shows the indicative all-inclusive price for a private half-day safari with round-trip transport back to the same hotel, for 1 traveller. Because the vehicle and jeep are private, a solo traveller pays for the whole vehicle — so the more people you share with, the lower the per-person cost. Prices are computed with our live distance-based pricing; get the exact figure from the Get Price tool.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — Udawalawe is one of the few national parks you can realistically do as a day trip from Colombo. It's ~165–180 km away (≈3.5–4.5 hours each way via the Southern Expressway), open every day with a 95%+ elephant sighting rate, and an all-inclusive private package handles pickup, jeep, tickets and guide — you just bring the early start.

Roughly 165–186 km depending on route. By private car via the Southern Expressway (E01) it's about 3.5–4.5 hours; the A4 via Ratnapura is similar but slower and more scenic. Allow 4–5 hours with a break.

Leave Colombo around 1:00–1:30 AM to reach the gate by ~5:45–6:00 AM for the morning safari. If that's too early, take a mid-morning departure (~9:00–9:30 AM) for the 3:00 PM afternoon safari.

Morning (6:00–9:30 AM) is generally best — cooler, peak activity and the best light. Afternoon (3:00–6:00 PM) is more relaxed with golden-hour photography. On a day tour, morning needs a very early start; afternoon is easier but means a late-night return.

About US$290–305 for a private, all-inclusive half-day safari with round-trip transport from a Colombo hotel (the private vehicle is charged per group, so a solo traveller pays for the whole vehicle). Mount Lavinia is slightly cheaper. Get the exact live quote from the Get Price tool.

Hotel pickup & drop-off, A/C private transport from Colombo, the private 4WD jeep, park entrance tickets, and an experienced guide — a fixed price with no hidden charges.

Popular stops include Amba Kola Hotel & Restaurant (fast, generous rice and curry), Ice Burge Family Restaurant (biryani), Water's Edge Udawalawa, and Udaya Restaurant.

250+ wild Asian elephants year-round, plus water buffalo, spotted deer, sambar, crocodiles, wild boar and jackals — and occasionally leopards. It's also a birding hotspot with 184 species including eagles, kingfishers, bee-eaters and many endemics.

No. Unlike Yala, Udawalawe is open 365 days a year, including public holidays — a reliable year-round day-trip destination.

Yes. A morning safari gets you back to Colombo by early evening; an afternoon safari returns late (≈10–11 PM). No overnight stay needed.

Yes. We offer pickups from Bandaranaike International Airport (~190 km, ~4.5 hours). Many guests fly in and head straight to a morning safari, or we transfer you to your Colombo hotel and collect you the next morning.

Absolutely. From a Colombo base you can add the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Kandy) or continue south to Mirissa, Galle or Ella instead of returning to Colombo. Ask us for a tailored multi-day itinerary.
