It is a great deal further than anyone tells you — 245 km, about 3 hours 39 minutes each way. That does not make it impossible, but it should change which safari you book. Hotel pickup anywhere in Colombo, private 4WD jeep, park tickets & naturalist guide, one fixed price.
✅ Last updated: October 5, 2026Search for this trip and you will be told Udawalawe is about 165 km from Colombo. We measured it, from the city to the park ticket office: 245 km and 3 hours 39 minutes. From ten individual Colombo hotels the range is 235 to 247 km. That is not a rounding difference — it is eighty kilometres, and it is the difference between a pleasant outing and a fifteen-hour day.
Colombo is the longest run we do. Further than Bentota at 186 km, nearly double Galle at 132 km, and almost five times Shangri-La Hambantota at 52 km. We will happily take you and most guests are glad they went. But you should book it knowing what it is — and knowing that from Colombo specifically, the afternoon safari is the better trip, which is the opposite of our advice from everywhere else.
Send your hotel and travel plan. You will get a fixed, all-inclusive price — and a straight answer about whether a day trip, an overnight, or a stop on the way south actually suits your itinerary.
There are two entirely different roads between Colombo and Udawalawe, and almost every published figure quietly mixes them up:
| Route | Distance | Driving time | In practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Southern Expressway (E01) | 245 km | 3 hr 39 min | What everyone actually drives. Fast, dual carriageway for most of it. |
| Inland A18 via Pelmadulla & Embilipitiya | 157 km | 4 hr 33 min | Genuinely shorter, but an hour slower on narrow winding road. |
So when a page tells you "about 165 km, around three and a half hours", it has taken the distance from one route and the timing from the other. That combination does not exist. Plan on 245 km and a solid three and three-quarter hours, and add a stop, because nobody drives that without one.
| Base | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Shangri-La Hambantota | 52 km | 1 hr 5 min |
| Tangalle | 70 km | 1 hr 19 min |
| Ella | 91 km | 1 hr 56 min |
| Mirissa | 106 km | 1 hr 52 min |
| Galle | 132 km | 2 hr 3 min |
| Bentota | 186 km | 2 hr 42 min |
| Colombo | 245 km | 3 hr 39 min |
All measured door to door to the main park entrance in October 2026, by the fastest route. Times assume a clear run; the stretch through Colombo itself is the unpredictable part.
This is the part that matters, and it reverses the advice on every other page we have written. From a beach base an hour away, the morning drive wins easily — the animals are most active between six and nine and you are home for lunch. From Colombo the arithmetic breaks:
| Option | Pickup | Back at your hotel | Honest verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Afternoon safari (recommended) | ~9:00 AM | ~10:00 PM | The one to book. A civilised start, you arrive rested, and the 3–6 PM drive has golden light and elephants coming down to water. |
| Morning safari | ~1:45 AM | ~4:30 PM | Technically the best wildlife hours, but you will sleep through the drive and write off the day before and after. |
| Overnight near the park | Afternoon, day 1 | Day 2 | What we would actually do. No pre-dawn start, and you can fit an afternoon drive on arrival plus a morning drive next day — two game drives instead of one. |
If you take one thing from this page: from Colombo, book the afternoon safari, not the morning one. The 6:00 AM gate is wonderful if you are sleeping an hour away. It is a poor trade when it costs you a 1:45 AM alarm and a four-hour drive you will not be awake for.
Tell us how many nights you have and where you are going next. We will lay out all three with real prices rather than pushing you at the most expensive one.
Udawalawe National Park was established on 30 June 1972 to shelter wildlife displaced by the building of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River. It covers 30,821 hectares — about 308 km² of open grassland, scrub and water. That openness is the whole point: you are not hunting for animals hidden in jungle, you are scanning a landscape where they are plainly visible. Alongside the elephants it records 43 mammal species and 184 birds, 33 of them migratory, plus 33 reptiles and 135 species of butterfly.
It is not a leopard park. Several Colombo-based day tours advertise "elephants, leopards and sloth bears" at Udawalawe. Leopards exist there in very small numbers, but sightings are far too rare to build a trip around. Yala is the leopard park — and from Colombo that is 276 km and about 4 hours 16 minutes, further again. If elephants are what you came for, Udawalawe is both the closer option and by some distance the more reliable one. See Udawalawe vs Yala for the full comparison.
Colombo is compact, so the hotel you are in barely changes the drive. We measured all ten of the city's best-known addresses to the park entrance:
| Hotel | To the park | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Marino Beach Colombo | 235 km | 3 hr 40 min |
| Granbell Hotel Colombo | 241 km | 3 hr 42 min |
| Mövenpick Hotel Colombo | 241 km | 3 hr 41 min |
| Cinnamon Grand Colombo | 242 km | 3 hr 44 min |
| Galle Face Hotel | 242 km | 3 hr 45 min |
| Taj Samudra Colombo | 242 km | 3 hr 45 min |
| Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo | 242 km | 3 hr 45 min |
| ITC Ratnadipa Colombo | 243 km | 3 hr 45 min |
| Hilton Colombo | 246 km | 3 hr 43 min |
| Shangri-La Colombo | 247 km | 3 hr 47 min |
Measured October 2026. The 12 km spread across the whole city is less than five minutes of driving, so pick your hotel on its merits — it will not change your safari day. We also collect from guesthouses, apartments and Mount Lavinia at no extra cost.
Bandaranaike International is 268 km from the park, about 3 hours 42 minutes — barely three minutes longer than from the city centre, because the expressway link runs past Colombo rather than through it. If you are arriving, that opens up much the best version of this trip.
Land, drive straight down, sleep near the park, take the morning safari fresh, and carry on to the south coast or the hill country afterwards. The driving becomes part of the journey instead of a round trip you repeat in reverse the same night. Plenty of guests do exactly this and it costs no more than the day tour once the hotel night is accounted for.
Send your flight number and where you are heading next. We will meet you in arrivals and build the safari into the route south.
The Department of Wildlife Conservation charges per person and per vehicle, so it is worth seeing the breakdown before you judge any quote — ours or anyone else's:
| Gate charge | Amount (LKR) | Approx. USD |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign adult — entrance component | Rs 9,080 | ~$29 |
| Per jeep — vehicle, service charge and tax | Rs 4,340 | ~$14 |
| Foreign child aged 6–12 | Rs 5,450 | ~$18 |
| Child under 6 | Free | — |
| One adult, total at the gate | Rs 13,420 | ~$43 |
| Two adults, total at the gate | Rs 22,500 | ~$73 |
USD figures are indicative, converted at approximately Rs 310 = US$1. The per-jeep charge is shared across everyone in the vehicle, which is why the cost per person falls sharply as your group grows. One jeep carries up to seven passengers.
So two adults owe the park about US$73 before a wheel has turned — and from Colombo there is 490 km of round-trip driving on top of that. Hold both numbers in mind when a cheap headline appears. At the low end those quotes are usually a seat on a shared minibus with the gate fees payable separately in rupees when you arrive. Ours includes everything, the vehicle is yours, and nothing is collected at the park.
Not included: an optional tip for the Department of Wildlife Conservation tracker, if one is assigned to your jeep at the gate. Trackers are provided free by the park, subject to availability.
Most people booking this trip have the same three questions about timing, price and whether it is too far. Send yours — no obligation, and we will give you a straight answer even if it means telling you not to book.
245 km to the main park entrance, and about 3 hours 39 minutes each way by the Southern Expressway. We measured it from central Colombo and from ten individual city hotels, and the range is 235 to 247 km. That makes Colombo the longest run of any base we serve.
Because there are two completely different routes and the published figures mix them up. The inland A18 route through Pelmadulla and Embilipitiya really is shorter — about 157 km — but it takes 4 hours 33 minutes on winding road. The Southern Expressway route is 245 km in 3 hours 39 minutes. Nearly every page quoting 158 to 186 km is giving you the inland distance next to the expressway timing, which is the one combination that does not exist. Everybody actually drives the expressway.
Honestly, only if you have no other option. It is roughly seven and a half hours of driving inside a thirteen to fifteen hour day. Guests who do it are usually glad they went — Udawalawe is the most reliable elephant park in Sri Lanka — but if your itinerary allows an overnight near the park, or lets you take the safari as a stop on the way south, both are a far better use of the same money. We will tell you honestly which fits your plan.
Afternoon, and this is the opposite of our advice from every closer base. The 6:00 AM gate would mean leaving your Colombo hotel at about 1:45 AM, which ruins the day either side and means you doze through the drive. A 9:00 AM pickup reaches the park comfortably for the 3:00 PM afternoon drive, which has the same golden light and elephants coming down to water. You get back around 10:00 PM.
For the afternoon safari we collect you at about 9:00 AM and you are back at your Colombo hotel around 10:00 PM. If you insist on the morning drive, pickup is about 1:45 AM and you return mid-afternoon, roughly 4:30 PM. We collect from any hotel in Colombo at no extra charge.
From Colombo, yes — it is the single best piece of advice on this page, and almost nobody will give it to you because it sells a night of accommodation instead of a day tour. Drive down in the afternoon, sleep near the park, and do the morning safari fresh. That removes the pre-dawn start and the seven and a half hours of driving in one day, and it lets you fit an afternoon drive on arrival as well, so you get two game drives instead of one.
Yes, and it is a sensible way to start a trip. The airport is 268 km from the park, about 3 hours 42 minutes — barely longer than from the city, because the expressway link runs past Colombo rather than through it. Many guests land, drive straight down, do the safari the next morning and carry on to the south coast, which turns the drive into part of the journey rather than a round trip.
Realistically, no — and several tour listings sold out of Colombo are wrong about this. Leopards exist in very small numbers, but Udawalawe is an elephant and bird park and sightings are far too rare to travel for. Yala is the leopard park, and from Colombo that is 276 km and about 4 hours 16 minutes, further still. If elephants are what you want, Udawalawe is both the closer and the more reliable choice.
Very likely. Udawalawe has a herd of about 250 believed to be permanently resident inside a 308 km² park of open grassland and low scrub, so the animals are visible rather than hidden in forest. Our guests see elephants on more than 95% of drives, usually several separate groups, and often a mother with a calf.
The gate charges a foreign adult about Rs 9,080 plus roughly Rs 4,340 per jeep in vehicle and service charges, so one adult is about Rs 13,420 and two adults about Rs 22,500 before anyone has moved. Children aged 6–12 are about Rs 5,450 and under-6s enter free. All of it is already inside the price we quote you.
The figure we quote covers the return transfer from your Colombo hotel, the private 4WD jeep, the naturalist guide and park entrance for every passenger. Nothing is collected at the gate. A solo traveller pays considerably more than the per-person rate for a group because the car, the driver's 490 km of driving and the jeep are not shared — the per-jeep park charge alone is about Rs 4,340 whether one person or seven is sitting in it.
All of them, at no extra cost — Shangri-La, Cinnamon Grand, Galle Face Hotel, Hilton, Taj Samudra, Mövenpick, Cinnamon Lakeside, ITC Ratnadipa, Marino Beach and Granbell among them, plus any guesthouse or apartment in the city. Every Colombo hotel is within about 12 km of every other, so the drive is 235 to 247 km whichever you are in and the pickup time barely changes.
Be honest with yourself about this one. The safari itself suits both groups well — the elephants are out in the open and the jeep ride is short. But 245 km each way in one day is a great deal of car time for a small child or anyone who tires easily. From Colombo we would steer families and older guests towards an overnight near the park, or towards doing the safari from a closer base later in the trip. Under-6s enter the park free.
Yes. It is a few kilometres beyond the park entrance and the milk feedings run at 9:00 AM, 12:00 noon, 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM. On the afternoon itinerary the noon feeding lands exactly when you arrive, so it fills the gap before the 3:00 PM game drive rather than adding time to the day — which makes it a genuinely good fit from Colombo.
Sunglasses, sun cream, insect repellent and a hat, plus binoculars and the longest lens you own. Bring a light layer for the drive home, when the air cools. Ask your hotel for a packed breakfast or lunch if you are on the early itinerary. Leave drone equipment behind — drones are prohibited inside the national park.
Nobody comes back from Udawalawe talking about the Southern Expressway. They talk about the moment a herd crossed twenty feet in front of the jeep, or the calf that would not leave its mother's shadow. From Colombo you pay for that in road time — more than from anywhere else we run this trip — and it is still the only place within reach of the city where you can reliably watch wild elephants in the open.
What we will not do is pretend it is a three-hour hop. Book the afternoon safari if you have one day. Book the overnight if you can spare a night, because it is a better trip for the same money. And if you are heading south afterwards anyway, let us build the safari into the drive instead of selling you a round trip.
