Gate figures are the official Department of Wildlife Conservation day-visit rates for foreign visitors. USD conversions use Rs 310 = US$1, the same rate our booking engine uses — your bank's rate will differ slightly.
Park fees are set by the Department of Wildlife Conservation and paid at the gate. The totals below are the official day-visit gate prices for foreign visitors, including entrance, vehicle and service charges. Because part of that total is charged per jeep rather than per head, the more people share a vehicle, the less each person pays:
| Group size | Total cost (Rs) | Per person (Rs) | Approx. USD* |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person | Rs 13,420 | Rs 13,420 | ~$43 |
| 2 persons | Rs 22,500 | Rs 11,250 | ~$73 |
| 3 persons | Rs 31,600 | Rs 10,534 | ~$102 |
| 4 persons | Rs 40,660 | Rs 10,165 | ~$131 |
| 5 persons | Rs 49,750 | Rs 9,950 | ~$161 |
| 6 persons | Rs 58,820 | Rs 9,810 | ~$190 |
| 7 persons | Rs 67,900 | Rs 9,700 | ~$219 |
| 8 persons (2 jeeps) | Rs 80,970 | Rs 10,121 | ~$261 |
| 9 persons (2 jeeps) | Rs 97,320 | Rs 10,813 | ~$314 |
| 10 persons (2 jeeps) | Rs 106,400 | Rs 10,640 | ~$343 |
*USD figures are converted at Rs 310 = US$1 and vary with the exchange rate. Fees are revised by the Department of Wildlife Conservation from time to time — this page is re-checked against the gate board monthly.

Most price pages just publish a table. Here is the arithmetic underneath it, so you can check any quote you are given. For a single jeep, the Udawalawe gate total breaks down almost exactly as:
The Rs 9,080 is the per-person entrance fee with tax. The Rs 4,340 is fixed per vehicle: it covers the jeep's park entry charge, the service charge and government tax on the vehicle. Because that second figure is shared across everyone in the jeep, your per-person cost drops steadily from Rs 13,420 alone to about Rs 9,700 in a full jeep of seven — a saving of roughly 28% per person simply by filling the vehicle.
| Your group | Calculation | Gate total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 adult | (1 × 9,080) + 4,340 | Rs 13,420 |
| 2 adults | (2 × 9,080) + 4,340 | Rs 22,500 |
| 2 adults + 1 child (6–12) | (2 × 9,080) + 5,450 + 4,340 | Rs 27,950 |
| 2 adults + 2 children under 6 | (2 × 9,080) + 4,340 (under-6s free) | Rs 22,500 |
| 4 adults | (4 × 9,080) + 4,340 | Rs 40,660 |
| 6 adults | (6 × 9,080) + 4,340 | Rs 58,820 |
Use this to sanity-check any operator's quote. If someone quotes you a gate figure well above Rs 9,080 per adult plus one jeep charge, ask them to itemise it.
Sri Lankan citizens and SAARC-country passport holders pay substantially less than foreign visitors. Bring photo ID — a passport, NIC or driving licence — because the counter will ask for it before issuing a discounted ticket.
| Visitor type | Adult | Child (6–12) | Under 6 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foreign visitor | Rs 13,420 total (~$43) | Rs 5,450 | Free |
| SAARC passport holder | about US$20 + tax | Reduced | Free |
| Sri Lankan citizen | about Rs 1,100 + charges | about Rs 100 | Free |
Resident and SAARC rates are indicative and change more often than the foreign tariff — confirm at the counter on the day. The vehicle charge and service charges still apply on top for every visitor category.
If you arrange your own jeep at the park, a private 6-seater 4WD with driver typically runs around US$40–80 for a half-day (about 3–4 hours inside the park). Jeep prices are per vehicle, not per person — a full jeep of six costs the same as a jeep of two, so groups save significantly.
That price range is wide because it covers genuinely different vehicles. At the low end you get an open converted pickup with bench seating and a driver who may speak limited English. At the upper end you get a purpose-built safari jeep with individual padded seats, a roof for shade, a cool box, binoculars and a driver who tracks the herds daily and knows which waterhole they favoured that week. On a three-hour drive looking for elephants, the difference is not cosmetic.
Udawalawa.com packages roll everything into one fixed price — hotel pickup and drop-off from anywhere in Sri Lanka, air-conditioned transport, a private 6-seater 4WD jeep (never shared), park entrance tickets for all passengers, and an experienced safari driver/guide:

Udawalawe has plenty of honest operators and a few that rely on visitors not knowing the gate tariff. These are the three we hear about most:
Tickets are sold at the counter beside the main entrance, and there is no advance-booking system for Udawalawe — the park does not cap daily visitor numbers, so you will not be turned away for arriving without one. What does run out is good drivers in peak season, which is the thing worth reserving.
The counter charges in Sri Lankan rupees. A card machine exists but depends on a mobile connection that is not always there, so anyone paying their own way in should carry cash. This is the main practical reason most visitors book an all-inclusive package: the operator queues, settles the gate in rupees, and hands you a single fixed price in your own currency.
Gates open at 6:00 AM and the last entry is around 6:00 PM. Arriving for opening costs no more than arriving at nine and gives you the best two hours of elephant activity of the day.
Enter your pickup hotel and group size and you'll see your fixed, all-inclusive price before you book — tickets, jeep, guide and transfer in one number.

Udawalawe is Sri Lanka's best-value big-game safari. Its foreign-adult gate total undercuts Yala's, jeeps are cheaper, and the park is far less crowded — with near-guaranteed elephant sightings rather than the leopard lottery Yala is famous for.
| Udawalawe | Yala | |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign adult gate total | Rs 13,420 | roughly Rs 15,000–18,000 (block-dependent) |
| Typical half-day jeep | $40–80 | $55–100 |
| Park size | 308 km² | 979 km² |
| Elephant odds | Near-certain, large herds | Good |
| Leopard odds | Low | Best in the world |
| Crowding | Moderate | Heavy at peak |

The official gate total for one foreign adult is Rs 13,420 (about US$43) for a day visit, including entrance, vehicle and service charges. Foreign children 6–12 pay Rs 5,450; under 6 enter free. Group rates lower the per-person cost — 7 persons pay Rs 67,900 total (~Rs 9,700 each).
For a single jeep it works out to roughly Rs 9,080 per adult plus a fixed Rs 4,340 per jeep covering the vehicle charge, service charges and tax. Two adults: (2 × 9,080) + 4,340 = Rs 22,500. The per-jeep part is shared, which is why cost per person falls as the group grows.
An all-inclusive half-day private safari starts from about $50–80 per person from nearby locations — pickup, private 6-seater 4WD jeep, park tickets and guide included. Day trips from Galle, Ella or Mirissa run $100–150 per person.
A private 6-seater 4WD with driver typically costs around US$40–80 for a half-day (3–4 hours in the park) hired separately. Jeeps are priced per vehicle, not per person, so bigger groups pay less each.
Yes — Udawalawe's foreign-adult gate total is Rs 13,420 versus roughly Rs 15,000–18,000 at Yala (block-dependent). Jeep tours are also generally cheaper, and the park is much less crowded. See the full Udawalawe vs Yala comparison.
No. Foreign children aged 6–12 pay a reduced Rs 5,450, and children under 6 enter free. Anyone 12 and above counts as an adult for tickets.
No. Udawalawe does not cap daily visitor numbers, so tickets are always available at the gate. What is worth booking ahead is the jeep and driver, especially in the December–March and July–August peaks.
The gate counter charges in Sri Lankan rupees. A card machine exists but depends on a connection that is not always available, so bring rupees if you are paying your own way in. On a package, the operator settles the gate for you and you pay one fixed price in USD, EUR, GBP or rupees.
Half-day, for most visitors. The ticket is a day ticket so a full day does not double your gate cost, but Udawalawe is compact and elephant activity concentrates early morning and late afternoon. Most people see everything they hoped for in one 3–4 hour session.
Usually because a quote excludes the park entrance fee — the largest single component. A jeep-only quote of $40–60 looks far cheaper until you add ~Rs 9,080 per adult at the gate. Always ask whether park tickets for every passenger are included before comparing.
Payment is at the start of your safari — in USD, EUR, GBP or Sri Lankan rupees, with major credit cards accepted. The quoted price is final; no hidden fees.
Meals are the only extra. Everything else — hotel pickup and drop-off, AC transport, the private jeep, entrance tickets, guide and service charges — is included. Local restaurants near the park serve lunch.
Fixed all-inclusive prices, private jeep, near-guaranteed wild elephants.
